Recycling ships at sea: the SeeElefant
A converted freighter with sorting, shredding and recycling systems on board that can anchor at plastic hotspots with no recycling capacity and process about 60,000 tonnes a year.
One Earth One Ocean’s SeeElefant brings recycling to places that have none, completing a chain in which smaller boats collect plastic from rivers and coasts and the ship recycles it. The first ship is planned for 2027 with a three-year Mediterranean demonstration tour, and a November 2025 letter of intent from South Pole estimates it could earn up to 32,000 carbon credits a year.
