Global Plastics Treaty (UN negotiations)
A legally binding treaty on plastic pollution across its full life cycle, under negotiation since 2022.
The UN Environment Assembly launched negotiations in March 2022. Talks in Busan (late 2024) and Geneva (August 2025) ended without agreement, with countries divided over limits on plastic production. On 7 February 2026 the committee elected Ambassador Julio Cordano of Chile as its new chair. Heads of delegation met informally in Nairobi from 30 June to 3 July 2026, and the next formal session (INC-5.4) is expected no earlier than March 2027.
